A dental implant is a tooth root-like structure usually made of titanium placed inside the jawbone. Once integrated with the jawbone, it can be utilised to connect a prosthesis (a removable denture, a dental crown or a dental bridge) to replace missing teeth. These implant-supported prostheses can be used to replace a single missing tooth, several missing teeth or full arch missing teeth.
Surgery is needed to place an implant into the jawbone, the implant will usually integrated with the jawbone after three to six months, after that, it will be ready to connect a prosthesis. In some situations, where there is insufficient amount of jawbone to receive an implant, an additional bone grafting surgery may be required.
Dental implant therapy is now becoming very popular over other traditional missing tooth replacement methods. When comparing with a removable denture, it is more stable and comfortable, while when comparing with a dental bridge, it can be utilised in more different situations and does not need to grind the neighbouring teeth.
